Musical Madness!

Today we went out to the field and created our own reed instruments. To do this, we held a single blade of grass tightly between our thumbs, placed our thumbs to our lips and blew. When we did this, the blade of grass vibrated, causing a note! We even realised that you can change the pitch of the note by changing the position of your lips and air pressure over the blade of grass. We also found that it was easier to create a note with a wider blade of grass.
It took us a while to grasp the concept. but some of us are getting better with practice! Perhaps we could create an orchestra with our home-made reed instruments!?

  6. Kia ora Room 10,
I was very interested to read about your reed instruments. When I go home from work I am going to give this a go! Will it work with any blade of grass? What a good idea to create an orchestra! Like other commenters have said, I would love to hear a video clip of your reed instruments in action.

    1. Hi My name is Zaeeda from room 10 and I am glad you liked this post. I am also happy that you are going to try this at home. You asked if it would work with any blade of grass. It would work but it is easier to use a thick blade. Thanks for commenting on our blog.
