Room 10 really enjoyed going along to Sylvia Park for the Manaiakalani Film Festival last week. We took on an extra responsibility by looking after the year 1 children. We also decided to go around the school to ask some other children what movies they enjoyed. Check it out!

Kia pai te kotahi artwork 2
This week, room 10 did some collaborative artwork. We were each given a little square which was one part of a bigger artwork. Some examples of the little squares were:
We each worked on our square. We then put them together to create the final piece of artwork. As we put the pieces together, we realised that the artwork was the Manaiakalani logo!
Here is our abstract version of the Manaiakalani logo which we created!
We realised that it was quite tricky to enlarge each piece so that all the pieces fitted together. We can be thinking more about how we can use our knowledge of fractions to help us do this better next time. It was also challenging to choose the correct colours to blend together.
Even so, we were pretty happy with our modern take on the Manaiakalani logo! What do you think?

Kia pai te kotahi Artwork
This term, we made a 'Kia pai te kotahi - better together' banner to hang up in our classroom. We were each given a letter which we had to colour in. We then had to decorate around the letter in any way we wanted, to represent us. The artwork was only completed because EVERYONE in Ako 3 contributed.
The artwork is so big it is difficult to get it all into one photo! It is also double sided! Here are some photos of us admiring our amazing artwork!

Team work challenges: Israel's Writing
Today after assembly we came to class and did two challenges. The first one was called the human table then the second one was when you and your partner had to try and stand up. The twist was that you had to be linked up with your partner and if you touched the floor with a flat hand you were disqualified.
The first task we did was the human table. There were four chairs and then there were four people on the chairs. The names of the people were Bryston, Lucian, Roman and me! Those were the people that were with me for the first turn. The challenge was that you had to try and stand up with out any chairs under you. When you were standing, the teachers, Miss West and Mrs Sio, were pulling the chairs out from under us. When they were gone we had to lie on each other so we had no support to stay up. The funny part was when everyone was yelling and when Roman, Lucian, Bryston and I fell onto the floor. Then Miss West went to choose more people after me and my group. It was so funny through the whole thing.
The point of the game was to use teamwork and to work better together. By the way, you can probably guess what, one group completed the activity. If you know which group it was, please leave a comment telling me who you think won and who you think lost.

Marshmallow and Spaghetti Tower Challenge
Today in class, we had a challenge to create the tallest tower out of marshmallows and spaghetti. It was really difficult! The groups only had 10 marshmallows and 20 pieces of spaghetti each. Some groups realised they could break the marshmallows up into smaller pieces but then it got really messy!!
We learned lots about team work. Most groups had to work through some challenges where their groups didn't work together as well as they could. We talked about it afterwards to think about what did and didn't work. The biggest challenge was how to deal with people in the group who just wanted to eat all the marshmallows!!

Camp 2019
What a fun week we had at camp last week! For some of our year 5s, this was the first time they had been away from home! We stayed in tents on our school field for two nights:
The teachers all arrived before sunrise on Wednesday morning, to begin setting up the tents. This beautiful sunrise made the early morning well worth it! Don't we live in the most beautiful place?!
We did so many fantastic activities and everyone participated and had a great three days! Keep an eye out for our movie which will show some more of the footage from camp.

Mr Burt, along with a group of fantastic year 8s and whānau, took us kayaking down at the beach:
Mr Jacobsen taught us how to play cycloball:
